Elaine Bachman, Great Books in Prison Coordinator

Elaine is a former Chicagoan by way of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Santa Fe, N.M., now once again living in Chicago. But, she is holding on to those New Mexico ties. Along the way Elaine has served two tours in the Peace Corps; first in Honduras and most recently in Azerbaijan.

While serving in both Honduras and Azerbaijan, Elaine worked in the Community Development sector, where she independently developed numerous projects, large and small.  A few highlights: in Honduras, she utilized her theater background going into the schools teaching mime, storytelling and body movement, and  worked in the medical clinic as a support to the doctor and the women visiting the clinic.

In Azerbaijan, Elaine ran English speaking discussion groups for young adults with critical thinking a focus. She received  a grant to develop and  produce a show publicizing the plight of the disabled in Azerbaijan, and worked with the Azerbaijan English Teachers Association to teach them organizational development.

Elaine holds a double major from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in cultural anthropology and speech/theater.

Elaine’s life in the not-for-profit world, both professionally and non-professionally, has been long, diverse and rarely boring. Elaine is a writer and occasionally performs her work.
